CAL/PELL GRANT ADMINISTRATION

THINGS TO KNOW:

  • How do I contact the California Student Aid Commission also known as CSAC?

Visit the California Student Aid Commission Web site at www.csac.ca.gov . Contact the Commission's Customer Service staff at 1-888-224-7268 (888-CA-GRANT) or by email at custsvcs@csac.ca.gov.

How do I get a Cal Grant?

You must submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid by the priority-filing deadline of March 2. In addition, if you are a first time Cal Grant applicant, you must complete a Cal Grant GPA Verification form and mail it to the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) by March 2nd.

I am currently receiving Cal Grant. Do I need to complete a GPA Verification Form?

No, a verified GPA is not required. To continue receiving a Cal Grant, students must complete a new FAFSA each year. Grants are renewed if students show a financial need, which is evaluated by the campus they will be attending.

I filled out a GPA Verification Form last year and did not receive a Cal Grant. Do I fill out another GPA Verification Form again this year?

Not if you have completed 36 units at our institution.  UCLA will electronically send your GPA to the California Student Aid Commission before the March 2nd deadline.

  • I am transferring to UCLA and have never been awarded a Cal Grant before.  How do I get my Cal grant GPA Verification form filled out?

If you have completed at least 36 units of transferring coursework, UCLA will electronically send your GPA (transferable units only) to the California Student Aid Commission before the March 2 nd deadline.

I am transferring to UCLA and I have been awarded a CAL Grant at my previous school. What do I need to do to receive a Cal Grant at UCLA?

You need to notify the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) of your attendance at UCLA. To do so, fill out the Grant Record Change Form (G-10) or online at https://mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov

On my California Aid Report (CAR), it states that I am eligible for both Cal Grant A and B and to contact my school. Can I choose Cal Grant A?

We recommend that you choose Cal Grant B. The first year's Cal Grant B award is for access costs only, expenses for transportation, supplies and books. Beginning with the second year of Cal Grant B benefits, you receive the access costs in addition to the tuition and fees. Over four years, you will receive more from Cal Grant B.

Can I accept Cal Grant A in my first year and switch to Cal Grant B in my second year?

No, once funds are disbursed, you cannot switch your Cal Grant program.

I am receiving outside scholarships that will pay for my tuition/fees, can I still keep the Cal Grant A or B award?

If the scholarship specifically states that it is to be used for tuition/fees only, you cannot keep the Cal Grant award. If you are receiving the Cal Grant Access award, you may still receive these funds based on your need. We will report to the California Student Aid Commission that you are receiving an outside award that is paying your tuition and fees for the academic year in question, since some scholarships are not renewable.

Will I lose my Cal Grant eligibility if I leave school for a quarter?

Not if you request a leave of absence from the Cal Grant program. If we report a partial or full payment for a term in which you eventually request a leave of absence, your program eligibility for future benefits will be reduced. Your total leave of absence may not exceed more than one academic year.

I am not eligible for a Cal Grant A or B Entitlement Award. Can I compete for a Cal Grant Competitive Award?

Yes, these awards are similar to the Cal Grant A and B Entitlement awards, except that they are not guaranteed. You must file the FAFSA by the March 2nd deadline and meet Competitive eligibility criteria.

I am enrolled in an engineering program and it requires me to complete more than four years of undergraduate study. May I request an additional year of payment?

UCLA has no mandatory fifth year programs. You may request an additional year of payment if you plan to enroll in a teacher preparation program. You must submit a request for Cal Grant Teaching Credential Program Form with CSAC .
